Barbara
has been a resident of Chilliwack her whole
life and has spent nearly all of that time
in the Atchelitz area where her and husband
Gordon raised seven children. She joined
the work force after most of her children
had moved on, and worked at a cannery located
in Atchelitz.
She soon felt she was ready to be her own
boss and purchased the Airport Coffee Shop
in April of 1980. |

At
that time the Coffee Shop was located in the
original (some of you long time Chilliwack
residents
will remember) octagon shaped building with seating
for 8 and counter service for 10 more and
was
little more than a hot dog stand.
Barbara purchased a second restaurant, Devan’s
(Sardis) in 1982 named after her youngest child
and successfully ran the two for 8 years.
The construction of the new airport terminal
building was completed in July of 1986 and the
Coffee Shop
was moved in August of that same year. The Coffee
Shop now seats 60 inside and 24 outside on the
patio.
Barbara’s son Jon joined her at the beginning
(1980) washing dishes and serving customers
part
time at first, and has been managing the Coffee
Shop full time for more then 20 years. Barbara’s
late husband Gordon retired from Dairyland
(1982) to
help Barbara and Jon at the Coffee Shop as well
to spend time with his real passion of hobby
farming.
Barbara’s youngest son Devan also has worked
at the Coffee Shop while he attended U.N.B.C.
Jon became a full partner in 2000 and his son
Brent now works as a dishwasher in the summer
months.
